Thanksgiving: Mike’s Top Ten List

I am officially taking Thanksgiving Day off from this blog thing.   But before I do I wanted to make a top ten list of things that I am thankful for this year, in ascending order:

10.  Buffalo Wild Wings on Tuesdays

9.    Technologies and human beings that can repair things even in the human brain

8.    Yesterday

7.    Health Insurance

6.    Today

5.   People like you who care and pray…and leave comments: extended family, friends old and new…even strangers whom I have never met, yet who have jumped in the wagon with us on this journey.

4.   An amazing church family whom I love dearly and who reciprocate in manifest ways

3.   The privilege of seeing and appreciating all of life through the grid of a heightened sense of my own mortality

2.   My wife and children: Karla, Luke, Benjamin, Elisabeth, Gabriella, and Jared.

1.   The future inheritance of a Kingdom that cannot be shaken; where all things are made new (Hebrews12)

Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. Happy Thanksgiving to the Evan’s family! We are praying for Mike, and the whole family. We pray for God’s clear leading as you contemplate the various options for treatment. A verse came to mind as I was thinking of you earlier this week. It’s 2 Chronicles 20:12 – part of Jehoshaphat’s prayer, “……We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. We have not commented thus far, but Alan and I read your posts daily – Alan sometimes comes in the door asking if we’ve had any news from you! Our family is also praying daily for you and for God’s specific wisdom and peace for the direction that He knows you are to take. We have been blessed by the words He has given you to share with your prayer warriors. I know that God would have you do just what you’re doing – trusting Him, growing in Him, drawing closer to Him, and leading others to do the same…….

    Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

  3. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. May you be continually blessed with peace, discernment, wisdom & knowledge, & the Lord’s leading as well as for your caregivers. That the right decision at the right time will be made for your perfect recovery and escape from this detour in the road. God Bless you much

  4. Mike we wish the very best for you and the family. I don’t think we need to say how much you have always meant to us; if we had another son, we would want it to be you.

However, and I know God is going to take care of you – heal you and you will learn something valuable only He knows about right now – in this journey you will grow.

But as a Mom one thing I am happy to take note of No. 10. You mentioned “Buffalo Wings.” For me, this is a VERY GOOD SIGN! You still have a good appetite and you know that you are welcome to come and eat our food anytime you want!!! Remember? Love you and God Bless!

  5. Hi Brother Mike,
You know, of course, that I am Jeff and Bev’s pastor. Bev has kept us up to date with her vocal prayer requests at our prayer meetings, so please be assured you are being prayed for at Calvary Baptist Church in Grinnell. I finally took the time to go on your blog site tonight, and I read most of your illness updates. Thank you for sharing your heart and experience with us! May God bless you for your simple faith in His plan and providence. I also enjoyed looking at your church’s website. You will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers, expecially as Feb. 12 nears. Who knows…perhaps Jesus will return before then!! That would be wonderful…Even so come, Lord Jesus!!

    Prayerfully yours,
    Pastor Don Johnston
