Bring the Man Food!

What an eventful day we had!  Following the swallow study, Mike was eating by 2:10.

He started with the Oreos, shortbread cookies, and milk they had on the floor.  At 2:30 they brought up a lunch of soup, salad, applesauce, a turkey sandwich and a cookie.  Even though it was hospital food, he managed to eat most of it.  We’ll see what he thinks of the food tonight.  It should be here at any time.  Oh, he also had a Snickers!

Dr. Meyer was finally done with surgeries for the day and stopped by around 4.  He almost sounded optimistic, which is very unusual for him.  Mike is now off of the blood pressure medication and there is very little risk of bleeding.  He will be moved to the regular neuro floor tomorrow.  He’s down to only one bag of medication hooked up to his body.

I had assumed that 5 days in ICU following surgery would put him discharged next weekend sometime.  That does not appear to be the case.  The physical therapist was in at the same time as Dr. Meyer, and he told her that if a bed is available, Mike could move to inpatient rehab on Wednesday or Thursday.  We still have to verify that our insurance will cover it at Mayo, but as of now, this is the plan.  That will only be 6-7 days after surgery, which is what we were originally told.

Mike also had two sessions of rehab today.  The second one showed improvement over the first, so I could see how even a little rehab produces results.  She worked his arm and leg and had him sitting on the on the side of the bed.  When she asked him if he was ready to stop, he said, “Only if you’re ready to give up.”  She eventually had to go pick up her daughter.  It was obvious that Mike will work hard at this.

I’m headed back to the Krueger’s house to spend time with the boys.  I plan to bring them with me tomorrow  and a friend from church will be coming back for a couple of days.   Today really felt like we turned another corner.  We are definitely on the upswing!

  1. Great news. Great reading. Love it, love it, love it.

I always liked the soup at St. Mary’s. Are you able to get free parking passes? I know each day is expensive. Our social worker was able to get us complimentary ones. Just a tip.

I also figured walking the SMH “square” on the ground floor was good exercise in the morning, but then I slept in the room with Chloe so I was there at all times.

God moves in mysterious way His wonders to perform: He plans His footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm.

You fearful saints, fresh courage take; the clouds you so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break int blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, but trust Him for His grace; Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face.
Blind unbelief is sure to err and scan His work in vain; God is His own interpreter, and He will make a plan.

  6. We know Mike will work at this like the Olympic athlete that he is. Or at least attains to be! Seriously, we rejoice with you in all the many ways that you are seeing progress and will count the days until you’re all back where you belong in Earlham. Karla, thank you for taking the time to keep us posted in the midst of all you have going on. We appreciate you!

  8. I’d like to correct Lynne. Most of you don’t know this, but Mike was 1st team all-state YMCA basketball league as a senior in high school. I think he even has the newspaper clipping from the DM Register to prove it. So, I encourage Mike to continue to work like the all-YMCA player that he still thinks he is! Long live the triple pump! 🙂

Everytime I read an update, I’m encouraged. God is good! Keep the faith, bro!!

  10. Oh, Karla, I’m crying with joy and thankfulness. God is good all time regardless of our circumstances but how gracious of Him to show such tangible hope and progress. We rejoice with you and will continue to pray. How are doing with sleep? Are you getting enough? Praying for the kids’ time there as well.

Have Luke give you a big fat ol’ hug from me. He’ll love that. LOL.

  12. Pastor Mike & Karla,

So glad to see that the competitive part of Mike’s brain is going strong! I’m sure the nurses will have fun with his rehab. We are so thankful for the progress being made everyday. Praying for you both to get sweet, restful sleep tonight. Enjoy your time with the boys, Karla. Someday I’ll tell you a funny story about why Mike’s fears about the nurses made me crack up so much…

We love and miss you all!

  14. Dear Mike and Carla,

Two words come to me when I think of you, the first one from Psalm 56:8 which reads,

Psalm 56:8 8 You have kept count of my tossings;1 put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?

Every sleepless movement noted. Every tear counted. And therefore I assume by implication every fear felt and every doubt understood, and every sign noted.

The second text is 1 Peter 5:7 which contains an exhortation and a promise; the exhortation though mentioned first springs from the promise that is mentioned second.

1 Peter 5:6-7 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Reading in from verse 6 there is actually a sort of ‘promise sandwich here;’ promise – at the proper time he may exalt you – then exhortation – casting all your anxieties on him – and then promise #2 ‘because he cares for you…” That last line given a literalness that is wooden, but that I find encouraging might be rendered this way, ‘’…casting all your anxieties on him, because it matters to Him concerning you…’

It matters to Him concerning you…. What will happen, how long will the recovery take and how complete will it be and how frustrating will the process be? God cares about these questions and He knows the answer to each one.

Please let me know if this is the right e-mail address to use – just send back ‘got it!’

I love you Mike – you have been nothing but a blessing to my life and I am so thankful for you and will be praying that the Lord would give you a complete recovery and a return to excellent health and the most fruitful service you have ever known.

For whatever reason I think of a line we used to sing as children when I was in Sunday School, it went this way,

‘The Lord knows the way through the wilderness; all I have to do is follow…’

That is profoundly true, and you are both followers of the Lord Jesus – my prayer is that the Lord will strengthen you to follow on.

Shamefully inconsistent in my own following,

    Randy

Keep up your chin Karla – You too have been and are under lots of stress. All of you are receiving so many thoughts and prayers – and God is with you every step on this path. Mike, I wish we were closer and I’d bring you over some “sweet treats”!!! Love, John & Sue

  19. Mike and Carla,
Wow! What a testimony of God’s protection, sustenance and grace. I can’t imagine the emotional rollercoaster you’ve been riding. Must be a blur. However, I can relate to the fierest belief of Romans 8:28. God does work in ways to benefit and bless His beloved children. I am awed by His daily provision and presence, and I know you are too. May God continue to remind you of the depth of His love for you as you experience Him in new ways on this journey (Eph 1:15-20).
    Praying for you,
