Monday Update

Mike did not manage to get much sleep, but was much less restless last night, and now we know why.

When I got here early this morning, Mike was in the chair looking out the window and talked to me in sentences.  I was very surprised!  As he got tired, this slowed down, but that is not unusual.  He was in the chair from 5:30 to 8:30 and has been sleeping ever since.

The nurse told me he started running a slight fever last night, which was treated with Tylenol.  When that broke, he started talking in sentences.  She said that she had never seen anything like it.  I would attribute that to God!

Mike started telling the nurses about our church and our family.  He then said that the reason he was so agitated the two previous nights was that he was sure the nurse was trying to murder him!  I’d be agitated too!  He was also thinking that Dr. Meyer was his enemy, but is over that as well.  Apparantly the previous blood pressure medication he was on can make people think strange things.  Hopefully we’re past that with this new meication.

Since he is talking, I’m sure some of you can guess what he’s talking about:  food!  Yesterday he kept asking for Snickers.  He has not had anything to eat since Wednesday night.  The swallow test is scheduled for 1:30, so hopefully he can eat after that.

Jared finally came to enjoy going in to see Mike yesterday.  Of course, he is way too observant and started commenting on Mike’s feet.  He said, “Daddy moves his left foot.  That other one is stuck.”  Ouch!  I told him that hopefully it will be unstuck soon!

Apparantly there is information going around that Mike is paralyzed.  I suppose you could technically say that his right arm and leg are paralyzed, but we are very hopeful that it is temporary.  Overall, I am very happy with the progress that has been made.  Hopefully he will get out of the ICU tomorrow and get working on this rehab!

  1. I had to “snicker” over the bad thoughts Mike was having in regards to his nurse and doctor. It is not funny, but I have had this happen. I do this every time I am on the vent for my asthma. It has something to do with the medication given to me to keep me calm. My body may be calm, but my brain is thinking terrible thoughts. This pesists for a couple of days after I’m off the meds. I guess the meds must clear my brain. My Mother gets a kick out of some of the crazy things I say during the “drug induced sycosis”.

I am so very thankful to God that all is looking better. You are all such an awesome family. Prayers have been flowing here like never before.

We love you all. Keep up the good work.

  2. Mike & Karla,

I am so thankful to hear that surgery went well and that you are on the road to recovery. The days ahead will be both good and not so good. On the not so good days – remember all that Paul was able to accomplish, even with that thorn in his side.

I thought of you when I saw this photo – http://ihasahotdog.com/?s=gently

    God’s speed –

This is GREAT NEWS! I would love to say “I never doubted he would be able to talk again” but of course, I’m not that smart. Only God knows what his plan is for Mike and the rest of us. Remain strong, it sounds like Mike is on the path to recovery. I’m so happy for you!

    We’ll keep praying.

  5. Hey cowboy missed seeing your smiling face today. I slept most of the trip home and plan on going to bed early tonight. Glad to hear the nurse is not trying to kill you at night and that you now know the doctor is a good guy :). Just gotta love the effect of drugs.
I prayed several times during the night that you would get to eat today. Sorry I wasn’t able to sneak food pass the nurse, I tried several times but they have been well trained. Look forward to seeing you this weekend, I promise to bring some real food for you.

    Take care
