Another Rough Night

We had hoped that getting out of ICU would enable Mike to get a good night’s sleep, but that was not the case.  With possible inclement weather approaching, I decided to come back to the hospital after dropping the boys off at the Krueger’s house.I got to witness first hand the agitation and paranoia he has experienced every night.  The doctor said that there is still some of that blood pressure medication in his system and as soon as it is out the paranoia will go away.  Last night he was convinced he was going to die from coughing.

Mike also ran a fever last night and they are not sure why.  So, today he is having an ultrasound of his right leg to rule out blood clots.  He is having a CT scan to rule out intracranial bleeding, and he already had a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia, as he has a very bad cough.  As a result of the fever, and in my opinion, lack of sleep, he is not talking quite as well today.  Dr. Meyer gave his typical line, “This is to be expected.  Remember, it’s a long process.”  So, I’m expecting better tomorrow!

He missed the occupational therapist and the physical therapist, which will not make him happy.  They will both be back in the afternoon.  The rehab intake nurse was up and he is scheduled to go to rehab on Thursday, assuming a bed is available.  It will most likely be a semi-private room, which may help improve his speech.

For today, I am holding onto the fact the God is holding onto us.  He will not let us go, regardless of how our lives look.  God has used many scriptures and people to encourage us, so we’ll keep going for another day.

  1. Hello Pastor Mike and Karla,
Just a quick note to assure you of our thoughts and prayers here at Calvary Baptist in Grinnell, where Jeff and Bev are members. They keep us informed, and I got caught up reading your blog today. We will remember you again at our prayer meeting tonight. It’s sounds like you’re on sort of an emotional and spiritual rollercoaster, but that is normal for all you’re going through. It’s so good to know that our Lord abides faithful and neither slumbers nor sleeps. Keep looking up. Just do your best and let the Lord take care of the rest!!

    Prayerfully yours,
    Pastor Don Johnston
    Calvary Baptist, Grinnell

  2. Mike and Karla,

Just a note to let you know that you are not far from our hearts these days. We are remembering you before the Father each night as we (Paula & I) pray together. The day be difficult but remember God loves you and has you and your situation(s) in His firm grip. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both. God bless. Bob and Paula Spilger

  3. Waiting is not the easiest thing to do but is one of the best things. We are watching and praying for you again at First Baptist Church Guthrie Center Ia.

Psalm 40:1 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

  4. Mike and Karla,
You never are far from our thoughts, Danny and I pray for you every morning during our quiet time together. I understand how as time goes by your spirit gets a bit discouraged, don’t be hard on yourselves for times when you go through these moments, that is natural. God understands that more than anyone. He is familiar with your suffereing and pain. I know his love is so great for you both because he has placed compassion in the hearts of your Christian family to carry you in prayers. Your light has shone brightly and of that God can be praised. You are close to His heart and so when the discouragement comes just lay in your Daddy’s lap and we will go there with you. We love you both and will continue to carry you in prayer and in our hearts.
    Danny and Connie

  5. Mike and Karla: Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers as you face the troubles of the day. Not to sound redundant, but you know God will take care of you and your family. Everyone is praying for all of you and you are never far from our thoughts.

Thinking of you, John and Janet

  6. Reading your update makes me realize just how much little things, like a blood clot or a trace of medication, can affect the entire body. It makes me think of the Body of Christ. I’m so glad this venue is available for all of us to be able to walk this road with the two of you, although admittedly, we aren’t walking the exact road you are walking.

I just have this picture in my mind of God’s hand, and just how big it really is. Nothing is beyond Him.

  7. We call upoun you; our Sweet Jesus, please stand guard over Mike and Karla and remove discouragement. We pray you would continue to wash over them both with hope! May they both sense your love and presence today in a powerful way!

“Now hope does not disappoint, because the Love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given us ” Romans 5:5
