It’s a New Day

I arrived this morning at 6:10 to find Mike with another fever pushing 105, so I think we’re in for another long day.

I beat the doctor by 5 minutes, so I probably got maximum sleep.  They cannot figure out what the fever is from yet.  They are bringing in the infectious disease doctors today.  Obviously it is better to know what we’re dealing with than not, so please pray to that end.

He is still on the cooling blanket that he has been on since they put him back in ICU.  I am thinking this is the same thing that was used on our neighbors’ newborn daughter to preserve her life.  So, in spite of everything today, I have been thanking God for the technology and thinking of little Amanda next door.

As I was driving into Rochester, I was listening to  the Come Weary Saints CD.  I wrote about it a couple weeks ago, when we were still at home.  I decided that the Sovereign Grace people need to do another one called Come Even Wearier Saints.  I thought I was weary a couple weeks ago.  I wasn’t.  I hope it doesn’t get any wearier than this!

I also called a friend last night and told him that I needed a pastor.  He was very pastoral and told me that as hard as this all is, we didn’t make the wrong decision.  I needed to hear that last night.

My parents were at a basketball game and ran into someone they casually know.  His father had a stroke at age 44, which is exactly how old Mike is.  They discovered it was caused by an AVM.  He died a couple of years later.  He told my parents that he thought it was a good thing Mike had the surgery.  This is from a son, which is really why we did this, so that our kids will have a dad for many more years.

Just another way God is good.  When I am starting to question what we have done, He sends both spiritual and practical confirmation that all is well, from His perspective.  Hopefully by tonight it will be better from ours!

  1. We wish we were closer so as to be more of a support but know that prayers can be heard from anywhere. We pray that an answer to the problems will be found soon and Mike can continue on the road to recovery.
Sending a big hug to all of the family.

  2. God is so good to send those around us whom can minister to us the most when we need it the most. Dean and I have been discouraged to hear of Maike’s setbacks, and yet, we know from experience that they are common, and that God, in His mysterious sovereignty, has a plan for all these things. We will be praying for perseverence, rest, strength, and for peace in you both. Make sure to take care of yourself as well as Mike, Karla.
Isaiah 41: 10, 13 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand…. For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”

  3. Dear Karla and Mike,
I use the M’Cheyne Bible reading plan and am therefore, among other places in Job right now. What struck me this time in Job 3 is that these comments are made by the man that God calls ‘the greatest man in all the east. This is a man of real — very real — faith. But near the end of chapter 3 he writes,

“For the thing I fear comes upon me, and what I dread befalls me. I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest but trouble comes…’ (Job 3:25-26)

Karla, this is where you find yourself today — the things you fear have come and it is not surprising that you are not at ease — it is not surprising that you don’t feel rested — it is not surprising that you feel weary — God has a history of wearying those whom He loves most, and you and Mike are among the loved of God — about that there is no doubt. Jesus is keeping His promise to be with you ‘always’ — literally ‘all the days’ including 105 degree fever days like this morning. I wish he would touch Mike and take the fever I will be asking him — pleading with him to do that. But he loves you more than I and He is there and NOTHING will touch either you or Mike without His
OK, not today and not any other day either.

Shirley and I love you both, and my the grace be with you on this day when trouble has come.

  4. Dear Mike and Karla,

In the past several years, when dealing with extreme circumstances that God has allowed, the Scriptures have been most comforting, as they are for you now. And certain praise ongs seem to do that as well. For us, this one has lifted us to the throne room, even through tears …

    Blessed be your name
In the land that is plentiful
Where the streams of abundance flow
    Blessed be your name

    Blessed be your name
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
    Blessed be your name

    Every blessing you pour out,
    I turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
    Still I will say…
Blessed be the name of the Lord
    Blessed be your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
    Blessed be your glorious name

    Blessed be your name
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s all as it should be
    Blessed be your name

    Blessed be your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there’s pain in the offering
    Blessed be your name

    Every blessing you pour out,
    I turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
    Still I will say…
Blessed be the name of the Lord
    Blessed be your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
    Blessed be your glorious name

    You give and take away
    You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
    Lord, Blessed be your name

  5. There was a song that constantly came through my mind when we would start another treatment, enter St Mary’s or have a set back in Chloe’s treatment – Not real spiritual but helpful to me. Nicole Nordeman’s – song, Brave. The phrase “you make me want to be brave.” would circle around and around and I would pray those words – because she was so brave and I needed to be brave for her and felt more scared/exhausted.

Today I pray “Brave” for sweet sister in the Lord, Karla.
